  • Useless on AppleTV

February 2020 update: works fairly consistently on iPad. On AppleTV4 (latest) it frequently crashes. “Could not load BritBox, network error - Retry” gets stuck on the screen and the only solution is to delete the app and reinstall. May 2020 update. Crashing on AppleTV4 has gotten to the point the app is unusable. Almost a daily occurrence now that on loading the app, the usual BritBox could not load - retry error comes up, but now it does that with the previous viewed content blurred out but still running in the background. When is this going to get fixed!!??
  • Good shows, interface could be improved

I like the shows, although lately I seem to watch Acorn more often. Not sure if acorn has had better programs lately or what - but that has nothing to do with the app itself. There are a few things that bother me about the app: 1) it doesn’t show that you’ve already watched an episode or movie. I don’t usually remember the name or number of the last episode I watched so then I need to read the descriptions and usually watch part of several episodes to find one I haven’t seen. 2) you can’t jump ahead and backwards 15 or 30 seconds. If you want to go move up or go back you have to drag the dot on the progress bar. That’s really inconvenient and hard to do just 30 seconds or so. I usually like to skip the intro that’s the same in all episodes.. can’t do it on BritBox. 3) you have to choose close captions every time you watch a show. It would be nice to set that as a preference and then it would default to that choice each time.
  • No picture in picture

By no expoting makes it a bad app
I’m not sure why but BritBox and acorn tv don’t have picture in picture on the iPad or any other platform. BritBox also never answers email. I’ll probably cancel as they don’t seem to care about users . Lots of bugs
  • Does not have a “history”

I like the service but the fact that you don’t have a “History” of what we’ve watched is odd. Am I missing something? The service doesn’t have a few basics that other steaming services have. I still like it and we’ll keep it for now. But def needs updating on the app and the website. Thanks.
  • So Disappointing

Signed up for the free 1-week trial. The next time I tried to register and log in, I wound up going down a rabbit hole, trying multiple times to establish a PW. Each time, the app acknowledged my email address and responded that a link was sent. But it never was. No one to contact. I gave up and demanded a refund and, so sorry, had to terminate the subscription. I was really looking forward to accessing some of my favorite programs.
  • App is amazingly awful.

Won’t load, crashes constantly, “can’t play this show at this time, try later”. Incompetence at a wondrous scale.

This app is still spinning. Uninstalling it is the only way to stop it.
  • App is garbage (Rating is for app, not service)

Despite the promotional screenshots in the App Store showing the app expanded to full screen on an iPhone with a notch, this app has apparently not yet been updated to adapt to the iPhone X from 3 years ago, as it displays in an iPhone 6-shaped box on my current-gen iPhone. The scrolling feels wrong, as if they’ve just wrapped a web app with a third-party tool. The font is nonstandard, but rather than achieving a particular style, it simply helps make the app like a mobile website circa 2012. This is not helped by the menu, which is opened by an all-caps “MENU” button in the top left corner and leads to what is perhaps the dumbest design for a menu I’ve ever seen. It is clearly a menu built for use on desktop or TV that was crammed under a collapsible menu header to “make it work on mobile”. Choosing items in the menu causes them to highlight, and then about a second later, the page will actually open, and only then will it start a very slow transition to close the menu, after the page has clearly loaded behind the transparent menu. The video player itself isn’t awful if you ignore that in addition to the expected pillarboxing to fit on a wider screen, it is also letterboxed slightly (there is extra black space above and below the video, making the viewable area needlessly smaller) and the corners of the video are rounded off, which adds to the feeling of watching on a screen with an artificially limited size. Overall, I could at least get over that if it weren’t for the fact that status bar is not hidden, which means at all times, there is a bright white clock, signal bars, WiFi indicator, and battery indicator on the left/right side of the screen. In addition, the app prompts for Bluetooth access upon opening, which is likely from linking some third-party framework like Chromecast, but it still adds to the feeling of low quality app design that this app exudes. As a final disclaimer, note that this is a review of the iOS app, not the service itself, which is good when viewed on another device. Clearly this app suffers from lack of prioritization and quite possibly lack of care.
  • App for Apple TV claims I’m in a different country. FIXED

Update on 18 May: I received a response and was told how to fix the issue. Just a simple restart of the Apple TV box. Everything is working fine now. I up to Four Star. I would give Five but I do agree the CC needs work: option to keep it on all the time and a larger font size. Great customer service to my issue. Original post: Latest update for the app has geography issues. My Apple TV is set for United States, I am located in the United States, and I have been using Britbox for a few years. Now all I get on my Apple TV is “Unfortunately, Britbox is exclusively available in the United States and Canada.”
  • Adequate

So i can cast to my Sony Bravia from this Britbox app my iPhone 8. Im not sure the exact steps to set it up but got it working w lots of google search and trial & lots of error. It does work. No crashes. I use remote control device to pause, forward, rewind, etc. the app provides the close caption button. The downside to this Britbox app is its management of my favorites (called Watchlist in the app), and its failure to track and store what episodes of a series that I've already watched. Seriously, this app does nothing to track. Even worse, if this app brings up new randomly sorted list every time you open the app. Almost as if the app was designed to frustrate and confuse. Seriously, how hard would it be to store “last episode watched” for each series, along w progress of each episode if paused at less than 100%. That is so easy to do in software it just boggles my mind that we’ve had this for months and it still saves nothing. Bottom line, it works but manages nothing. Making this app only “adequate”. Sad. The content is great, the app beliw average.
